Chesapeake- Lawrence "Greg" Gregory, affectionately known as "Crummy," passed away peacefully on January 17, 2025, leaving behind a legacy overflowing with love, laughter, and treasured memories. Born on November 6, 1946, in Norfolk County to the late Percy Gregory and Katie Griffin, Greg's vibrant spirit, infinite energy, and compassionate heart touched countless lives.
Greg was a proud graduate of Crestwood High School’s Class of 1967, Greg was celebrated not only for his academic achievements but also for his exceptional dancing talents as a member of the Crestwood Bombers’ dance team. His lifelong love for music and dance brought joy and inspiration to those around him.
In 1968, Greg enlisted in the United States Army, serving honorably during the Vietnam War until his discharge in 1974. After his military service, he pursued his education at Norfolk State University before embarking on a career that spanned several industries. He worked on the chassis line at the Ford Plant, in the mail department at the Naval Base, and later followed his passion for beauty and style by becoming a licensed cosmetologist after attending Anne Barnes Cosmetology School. His dedication, versatility and strong work ethic were reflections of his character.
Greg’s infectious humor and generous spirit left an unforgettable impression on everyone he met. Known for lighting up any room with his charm and magnetic personality, he was not just the life of the party but the very essence of it. With his stylish wardrobe, love for shoes, and signature hats, Greg earned the nickname "Cool Daddy", amongst many others. Greg enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, dancing, grilling, watching westerns, and cheering on his favorite football teams—the Saints and the 49ers.
His greatest joy, however, was his family. Greg’s children were his pride and joy, and his grandchildren held an extra-special place in his heart. He cherished the moments spent guiding, mentoring, and celebrating their achievements, creating bonds that will last forever. A man of strong opinions, Greg was never afraid to speak his mind. He was outspoken, but his honesty and directness were always tempered with a deep care for those around him. Greg had a gift for connecting with people. He was a loyal friend and someone people could always count on. His honesty, loyalty, and warmth drew others to him, and his larger-than-life personality left an unforgettable impression.
Greg leaves behind a family that will forever hold his memory in their hearts, especially his children and grandchildren, who he adored more than words could express. Greg was predeceased by his beloved son, Jeffery Gregory, and grandson, Montourious McPherson. His legacy lives on through his devoted family who will carry his memory forward with love and honor: his children, Susan McPherson, Claude Riddick (Cynthia), Myra Gregory Horton (Darrell), Derrick Harris, Keywonnie Gregory, and Charnay Gregory; his grandchildren, Himi Evans, Jonthan Evans, Jalisha Gregory, Claude Savage, Devon Wilson, Derrick Harris Jr., Taashon Eatman, Aliyah Gregory, Ariel Gregory, Alexis Gregory, Xaireya Harris, Jordan Gregory, Christian Gregory, Kori, and Khai Wynn; and his beloved siblings, Percy Gregory Jr., Regina Ferrell, Bobby Gregory (Lucille), Audrey Gregory, Brenda Whitaker (Leroy), Bennita Brown (Elwood), and Chyennesia Griffin; His Uncle, Marvin Foreman Sr. of Chesapeake, VA. Greg’s presence will also be deeply missed by his great-grandchildren, his special cousin George Gatling, God daughter, Zari Hoyt and a host of extended family and dear friends.
Greg's legacy will live on through his family, his friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Greg was truly one of a kind- bold, full of life, and the greatest to ever do it. His spirit will live on forever in the stories, laughter, and love he leaves behind. Rest in peace, Crummy. You were loved beyond measure.

May God receive your spirit with grace. You were a source of constant encouragement, and I will never forget how instrumental you were in shaping my decision to join the Army. You saw something in me and pushed me toward a path of service. Every time I came home, your embrace reminded me of the bond we shared, as though no time or distance had ever separated us. Though you are gone, I rejoice knowing that you are now resting in the arms of Christ. Your legacy of love and encouragement will remain with me always. In Christ, Earl Sutton
